"That it is. Why don’t Lian and I come with you?" And there goes his ticket to the Elysian Fields. There was no way that he would be forgiven for dragging Lian into this.

"We can spend the rest of the week together and I’m sure that we can find something else to do while you attend the wedding."

Her expression may have appeared calm, but inside Jade’s mind was racing. “Okay,” She shrugged, dammit, she’d have to book a hotel room now. “Although you’re going to be bored out of your mind. I won’t be in the room much at all.”

"It has been some time since Lian has spent time with her grandmother in person. So I suppose that we can spend most of our time with her. But you will at least leave a little time for a date with me right?"

Kaldur shrugged. “I just assumed that you would be helping since you would be gone the entire week instead of a weekend.” Poseidon…now he was just looking for things to nitpick.

Jade pursed her lips, swallowing her initial response. He was digging, that much was certain. It was too late to tell him she wasn’t going to go, and she had a job that she needed to do. “Well, it is in Gotham. Kinda far away to go for a weekend.”

"I see." It was a good answer he had to admit. "Wish them the best for me then. Are you going to help them with the planning then?"

"I’m pretty sure they have everything done," Jade rose an eyebrow and looked at him. "I mean, it’s a week away and I’m not that close with her. Otherwise I’d be able to bring a date,” It had become so easy to lie to him.

Kaldur shrugged. “I just assumed that you would be helping since you would be gone the entire week instead of a weekend.” Poseidon…now he was just looking for things to nitpick.

"Nothing in particular," Kaldur said, avoiding a more confrontational answer. He stored away Jade’s reaction for later pondering. It probably wouldn’t encourage discussion if he asked now, and they really did need to try and have a normal conversation.

"I simply saw it on the way home from running errands today and thought that it was pretty."

"Mm, well it is," She replied simply, glancing back down at her phone. Great, another late night phone call tonight. She wasn’t sure how much she could keep this up, but a mission was nearing and Slade had his doubts about her training upkeep. "Very thoughtful of you," She gave him a peck on the cheek after closing her email on her phone.

"Oh so my one friend from childhood is getting married next week so I won’t be home for…that week," She glanced back at her phone. "Just fyi."

Kaldur cocked his head to the side. As far as he knew anyone from Jade’s childhood would be connected to her families business. Though it could be possible that it was just someone from high school. Either way his curiosity was piqued and a little prodding wouldn’t hurt. Or so he hoped. “And they do not want you to bring a date? How odd.”

"Yeah, well, it’s a childhood friend and you know I didn’t grow up in the best neighborhood," She shrugged and began picking the lint on her jeans. "Some people don’t get out of that income bracket."

"I see." It was a good answer he had to admit. "Wish them the best for me then. Are you going to help them with the planning then?"

The tone of Artemis voice surprised Kaldur. She rarely called, not that she needed to. They saw each other at the base quite often. But when she did call she normally didn’t sound so frazzled. Nor was she so secretive. It reminded him of how they were back on his fathers ship, and that was a feeling that he’d rather forget.

Artemis wouldn’t tell him what was wrong over the phone, but at least she agreed to let him drop by. Kaldur made sure to disguise himself before leaving the zeta exit in Palo Alto. He was not scheduled to make an appearance in the city, and with the paparazzi always on the look out an unscheduled visit to Wally and Artemis apartment would be big news. After scareing away a lone photographer, and searching for other opportunists, Kaldur rang the doorbell to the apartment.

Artemis drummed her fingers along the counter. It’d been a half hour since she called Kaldur. 31 and a half hours since she’d heard from Wally.

It wasn’t like him to be gone for so long without letting her know where he was. Sure, he had the odd overnight lab, or study cramming session at one of the guy’s houses when she was in the apartment, but something told her this was different. Call her clingy and paranoid, but she felt she had the right to be. They were in a odd line of work after all.

After a few more beats of her fingertips, she heard the doorbell, hurrying to let Kaldur in. “Hi, uh, thanks for coming by. I know it was kind of a rushed ,” She muttered, ushering him in before closing the door behind him. “We have a small problem.”

Kaldur nodded as he entered her apartment. “Small?” he asked and he took off his jacket. She certainly didn’t look like it was small. “Small as in the problem is actually manageable? Or small as an understatement?”

"Maybe small wasn’t the best word choice," she admitted, chewing on her lip as she moved to the couch, motioning for him to follow. "I, uh, well to be honest I might be freaking out over nothing. But… Kaldur, I haven’t heard from Wally in over a day and half. He left for school, said he was going to study after, and… he never came back," She tried to explain, going over everything in her head. "When I woke up this morning and realized he hadn’t come home, I figured he might have just stayed the night…. and would be home after school today. Except I haven’t heard from him since yesterday morning, and there’s no answer on his phone."

Kaldur sat down next to Artemis and crossed his arms over his chest. His eyebrow’s furrowed as the thought the matter over. It wasn’t like Wally to not call in, even if he was super busy at the lad. Technically its wasn’t possible for him to be somewhere that Artemis didn’t know about either since he was registered. paparazzi would have caught him for certain. The same goes for if he were hurt by some villain, it would be all over the news by now. They had many enemies, but Kaldur couldn’t think of anyone that would want to sneak and kidnap Wally without at least offering a ransom.

"No. I do believe that you are right to worry. It is simply too strange. Is there anything that you can think of that would have happened before now that would lead to this?"

It wasn’t until he started noticing strange behavior from Jade that he began to analyze himself. Kaldur remembered a page from one of M’ganns girly magazines that he had leafed through when they were younger. “15 ways to tell that he’s cheating.” It was a muddled mess of contracting behaviors that could easily arise from other more innocuous activities.

In his case anyway, the late nights and erratic schedule was because of his secret hero work, not another lover. And his guilt over sneaking around was what was causing the overcompensation. He didn’t want to doubt Jade. He could hardly fault her for keeping close tabs on her phone when he scarcely let his out of sight. Her late night trips to the bathroom were more frequent now than they were when she was pregnant with Lian, but he was the one using sparing matches with Conner as a cover whenever he had to lie about his bruises. He couldn’t complain that she was keeping her nails sharper than usual when some nights after some of their messier missions he comes home smelling like Dick’s bodywash.

His team had successfully busted another weapon smuggling ring last night. The new bracelet that he fastened to Jade’s wrist before plopping down beside her on the sofa was, based on his own psychoanalysis, an apology for being so absent minded during the week. She’d take it, hopefully without question just like the other gifts he’d offered over the past half a year, and they’d go back to pretending that everything was normal.

It was exhausting living a double life, especially when the person you were hiding from happened to sleep next to you in bed. She never anticipated an issue, Kaldur had always respected her need for personal space just as she accepted his needs, but something was different. She was hyper aware of all of his comings and goings and how they affected her own comings and goings.

She had taken all the necessary precautions, but even still she felt like he knew what she was doing. Her fingers slid across her phone’s keyboard as she wrote out a message, and she was so engrossed in her work that when Kaldur touched her arm she immediately ripped her phone away with her free hand.

A bracelet, that was…odd. She looked over at him a moment, vaguely wondering if she had forgotten some sort of anniversary or birthday before sending him a confident smile. “You always do know how to charm a girl,” She said the words as if she had rehearsed them, and then wondered when the last time they had a serious conversation was.

"What’s the occasion?" She still wasn’t sure if she forgot something.

"Nothing in particular," Kaldur said, avoiding a more confrontational answer. He stored away Jade’s reaction for later pondering. It probably wouldn’t encourage discussion if he asked now, and they really did need to try and have a normal conversation.
